(Two times the "Happy Birthday" song, or sing "Baby Shark" - you'll get midway through Daddy Shark).Īnd be thorough. Lather up with soap and scrub for 20 seconds. So do it, already! Especially after you've been out in public, touching a lot of surfaces. You can make a DIY cleaning spray by mixing 4 teaspoons bleach per quart of water, according to the CDC. David Warren, an infectious disease specialist at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Skip the baby wipesĪnd given that wipes are hard to come by at many stores at the moment, you can instead buy an EPA-registered disinfecting spray, such as one on this list from the Center for Biocide Chemistries, recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and by Dr. Wipe right: Use ammonia or alcohol-based products. And wipe down shared surfaces.įollow these tips for cleaning surfaces - your own and public ones. So, what can you do to protect yourself? Well, you've likely already heard this. "Of more concern would be utensils, and plates and cups that might be handled by a large number of people in a cafeteria setting, for example," he says. So infection comes from getting the virus on your hands and then touching your own eyes, nose and mouth. That's because most infection from the new coronavirus starts with the respiratory system, not the digestive tract. Kuritzkes says that based on prior research, it seems that "flat surfaces and hard surfaces are more friendly to viruses than cloth or rough surfaces."Īnd how about food? "Food is probably not a major risk factor here," Kuritzkes says. ![]() Much is still unknown about the virus's survivability on other types of surfaces like clothing, or carpeting. "Direct sunlight can help rapidly diminish infectivity of viruses on surfaces," he says. "Ultraviolet light can be a really powerful disinfectant and we get a lot of UVA light from the sun," says Daniel Kuritzkes an infectious disease expert at Brigham and Women's Hospital. So the survivability may vary, too.įor instance, if the virus contaminates a sunny windowsill or countertop, it may not last as long. By comparison, "in the real world, conditions fluctuate" - conditions like temperature, humidity and light. "In a laboratory experiment, the conditions are pretty carefully controlled and constant," he says. Lloyd-Smith says these findings establish a good ballpark estimate for the survivability of the virus on these surfaces. "Big picture, the look very similar to each other in terms of their stability in these environments," Lloyd-Smith says. They did this multiple times, for both the viruses, at various time points. ![]() Then the researchers documented whether the virus could infect those cells in the dish. In the lab, "they'd pick up the virus from the surfaces that had been contaminated and then put into cell cultures," he explains. ![]() To test the survival time of the virus, scientists at the Rocky Mountain Laboratories in Montana, part of the National Institutes of Health, conducted a series of experiments comparing the novel coronavirus with the SARS virus (a similar coronavirus that led to an outbreak back in 2003). Virus-laden respiratory droplets can land on doorknobs, elevator buttons, handrails or countertops - and spread the virus to anyone who then touches these surfaces. It's useful to know how long it can stay alive of course, because the virus can contaminate surfaces when an infected person sneezes or coughs. For instance, the virus remained viable on copper for only about four hours. Interestingly, some surfaces are less hospitable to SARS-CoV-2. The study is out in preprint form and expected to be published. "This virus has the capability for remaining viable for days," says study author, James Lloyd-Smith, an assistant professor of ecology and evolutionary biology at the University of California, Los Angeles, who researches how pathogens emerge.Īlthough the World Health Organization had previously estimated the survival time on surfaces to be a "few hours to a few days" based on research on other coronaviruses, this is the first study by scientists at a federal laboratory to test the actual virus causing the current pandemic, SARS-CoV-2. How long can the new coronavirus live on a surface, like say, a door handle, after someone infected touches it with dirty fingers? A study out this week finds that the virus can survive on hard surfaces such as plastic and stainless steel for up to 72 hours and on cardboard for up to 24 hours. When an infected person touches a surface, like a door handle, there's a risk they leave viruses stuck there that can live on for two to three days. ![]() It can be opened while witnessed by the postman. I think they’ve now earned a slot on the big stage. We hope to see Epica back in Japan very soon. Respect to the European symphonic metal masters. I go to a lot of gigs and this was one of the best gigs I have been to in quite a while. An what a way to finish their first Japan visit. The Tokyo gig is the final performance of Epica’s three-city The Japan Principle Tour. They are clearly loving the fact that they are finally on stage in Tokyo. This evening the band seems overwhelmed with the response from the Tokyo audience. Simone Simons of Epica on stage in Tokyo. I won’t be surprised if Epica will soon go to another level in the Japanese market. The whole Epica package – exquisite songs, great combination of melodic and heavy music and a frontwoman that stands out – is such a perfect fit for the Japanese market. Live they come across, at least this evening, as a tad bit heavier than in the studio which is not a bad thing as the audience is boiling over and ready to party. The end result works a treat both on record and live. ![]() Over the past decade and a half, Epica has developed its signature sound, combining melodic symphonic metal with faster and heavier parts and mixing clean singing with growling. The band puts on a show far above and beyond the fans’ expectations. Epica mastermind Mark Jansen leads the band from the front: not only singing and playing guitar, but driving the rest of band along in coordinated headbanging and hair-throwing attacks. Not content with standing at the back, he rocks out on stage with a handheld keyboard, even bringing his instrument into the audience to be with his loyal fans. Keyboardist Coen Janssen stands out as a showman who hugs the limelight. The rest of the band delivers the musical foundation: they’re tight and play like a well-oiled machine. In Simone Simons, Epica has what much of the competition lacks: a world-class vocalist. That combination quickly turn this into an incredible metal evening for all. This evening, in addition to a fantastic set list, we get a band on top form and an out of this world audience. We of course also get some old favourites such as “Sensorium” and “Sancta Terra”. Lucky us a big part of the Tokyo gig is centred around songs from the new album. Photo: Stefan NilssonĮpica’s seventh studio album, “The Holographic Principle”, was released last September and is perhaps the band’s best album so far. What an opening! Simone Simons of Epica on stage in Tokyo. They open a fantastic gig with the “Eidola” intro then swiftly moving into the terrific “Edge of the Blade” followed by “A Phantasmic Parade”. The audience at Club Quattro is loud and overexcited when Epica hits the stage. Obsessive devotion? Indeed! Simone Simons and Coen Janssen of Epica on stage in Tokyo. What a night! It took them 15 years to get here, but when European symphonic metal masters Epica did turn up to play in Tokyo, it was at a sold-out venue filled with Epica fans who knew all the songs. According to a March 22 letter from Fannie Mae, the purpose behind that is to make home buying more affordable for people who may not have large savings or help from family or friends. People with very small down payments will get a price break on their fees. So Fannie and Freddie would charge higher-risk borrowers more. The rationale is that the lower your credit score and the smaller your down payment, the higher the risk of you defaulting on your mortgage. Since these upfront fees are risk-based, they’re tied to credit scores and down payment amounts. Less Risky Borrowers Are Paying More In Mortgage Fees Here’s Why Many experts are calling foul on this change, as the higher fees are hitting people who are generally considered less risky. The big change is that, on a conventional mortgage, borrowers with down payments between 5% and 25% will pay more in fees than those who put down less than 5% of the home value. All other things being equal, fee percentages decline as credit scores rise. The person with a 760 credit score will be charged 0.5% of the loan amount in fees, while the person with a 660 credit score will be charged 1.625%. For example, consider two people, both of whom borrow the same amount and have a 5% down payment. The new price structure will continue to reward higher-credit-score borrowers with lower fees, contrary to recent reports. Depending on your loan amount, property type and the fee percentage that’s assessed, you could end up paying a few dollars more or a couple hundred dollars more each month. ![]() ![]() The fees are a percentage of your loan amount and can run anywhere from 0.125% to 2.875% on most mortgage loans. (Fannie Mae calls them “loan level price adjustment costs,” or LLPAs Freddie Mac simply refers to them as “credit fees.”) The agencies impose higher fees on borrowers they deem more likely to default on their mortgage based on factors like credit score and down payment. Beginning on May 1, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac-two of the main providers of mortgage financing in the U.S.-are hiking their risk-based fees. ![]() Now that we’re connected, let’s pull in ads performance metrics to your sheet.
